On Thursday, August 27, 2015, at approximately 6:51 a.m., Maple Heights Police responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Rockside Road and Lee Road South. The victim pedestrian, Kerry Kipfstuhl (40 years old), was fatally struck while attempting to cross the street. Ms. Kipfstuhl was struck by a Volkswagen Jetta driven by Nisa Harrison (28 years old.)
The SEALE Accident Investigation Unit (AIU) investigated the crash. It was determined that the driver had violated the red light and swerved to avoid an on-coming vehicle preparing to turn onto Lee Road South from Rockside Road. In swerving to avoid the accident, Ms. Harrison struck Ms. Kipfstuhl who had just left the curb to cross the street.
Based on the results of the investigation and reports from the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office it was determined the accident was caused by speed, weather, and the red light violation. There was no alcohol or drugs involved in the accident. The Maple Heights Prosecutor reviewed the investigation and ruled to charge Nisa Harrison with vehicular manslaughter, reckless operation, and a red light violation. Ms. Harrison was served her charges on November 9, 2015 to be heard in Garfield Heights Municipal Court.
