The Maple Heights High School wrestling team captured their seventh consecutive sectional title held at North Royalton High School February 14 & 15th by outdistancing a field of twelve teams. Maple’s 184.5 points was enough to top runner-up Parma with 178.5. Garfield Heights finished third with 162.5 points and the host school North Royalton was fourth with 158.5. The remainder of the field consisted of Bedford with 156, Saint Ignatius with 143.5, Shaker Heights with 103.5, Rhodes with 100, Normandy with, 94.5, Valley Forge with 31, Cleveland Heights with 24.5 and Lincoln-West with 0.
The Mustangs were paced by individual champions Andre Stowers (120 pounds), Juwan Moss (138 pounds), Dejon Moss (145 pounds) and Monterol Johnson (195 pounds). Larenz Robertson (220 pounds) and Antonio Weatherspoon (285 pounds) earned qualifying spots to the Mentor District Tournament with third place finishes as did Brandon Francik (126 pounds) and Lewis Glass (160 pounds) who finished fourth in their respective weight classes. Justin Primous (106 pounds) and Arys Kenner (182 pounds) battled their way to fifth place finishes and Trevon Atkinson (170 pounds) was sixth.
The current streak of seven sectional titles is the longest in Maple’s illustrious history. The Mustangs claimed championships in five successive years from 1967-1971 under Coach Mike Milkovich Sr. to set the previous mark. The victory was Coach Jamie Milkovich’s thirteenth sectional title as skipper of the Mustangs and Maple’s twenty-sixth overall since 1963.
