YOUNG, TALENTED MAPLE TEAM SEEKS 700th WIN

Maple Heights High School Head Wrestling Coach Jamie Milkovich will send out a young and talented team in search of the Mustang’s 700th dual meet victory since the program’s inception at the start of the 1948-49 season. While the Ohio High School Athletic Association does not keep an official record in the category of Most Team Dual Meet Wins, Maple’s 699 victories is widely accepted as an all-time record in Ohio. “It will certainly be an historic accomplishment,” said Milkovich, “it exemplifies our long and storied tradition in the sport of wrestling.”
Paul Milkovich, the father of Coach Jamie Milkovich, captured Maple’s first individual state championship at 165 pounds during the inaugural season of 1948-49. The Mustangs have added 47 individual state champions and 10 state team championships since then.
Senior state place winner Dejon Moss (145 pounds) and district place winner Andre Stowers (120 pounds) will headline a squad which will mix six returning district qualifiers with some talented newcomers. Other district qualifiers include Abdul Freeman (113 pounds), Brandon Francik (126 pounds), Monterol Johnson (182 pounds) and Antonio Weatherspoon (285 pounds). Sectional place winners Lewis Glass (138 pounds) and Larenz Robertson (195 pounds) also return.
Lake Erie League Tournament champion Tavaris Moon (285 pounds) and place winners Darnell Wells (132 pounds) and Jaimz Sowell (138 pounds) should also contribute.
Other returning letter winners include: Cordale Welch (106 pounds), Laquan Outlaw (126 pounds), Juwan Moss (138 pounds), Josh Corlew (145 pounds), Tristen Battle-Hardy (145 pounds), Treshon Dizard (160 pounds), Kirsten Green (170 pounds), Arys Kenner (182 pounds), Josh Coffee (182 pounds) and Carlton Flanagan (220 pounds).
Under Coach Milkovich, who garnered his 400th career victory at the close of last season, the Mustangs have won six consecutive sectional tournament titles, captured back-to-back runner-up finishes at the Mentor District Tournament and have finished sixth and eighth in the State of Ohio the past two years.
The Mustangs will travel to the Copley Briggs Duals (Dec. 7), the Hudson Holiday Tournament (Dec. 20 & 21), the Kenston Invitational Tournament (Dec. 27 & 28), the Padua Triangular with Normandy (Jan. 4), Kenston (Jan. 17), The Firelands Falcon Invitational (Jan. 18) and the Euclid Duals (Jan. 25).
Maple will host a Quadrangular with West Geauga, Cleveland Heights and Warrensville (Dec. 12), the Maroon & White Duals (Jan. 11), the Lake Erie League Tournament (Feb. 1) and Aurora (Feb. 6).
