On, Wednesday, September 2, 2013 a flag was raised for the first time at the new Maple Heights High School. And it wasn’t just any flag, it was a flag that had been flown over the US Capitol Building on April 16, 2012 in Honor of WWII Veteran Jim Zoubek’s 93rd Birthday and Zoubek donated it to the High School.
In addition to Zoubek, there were several other Veterans at the Ceremony including Don Schirmer (WWII and Vietnam) who shared a few words, as did Maple Heights High School Social Studies Teacher and Purple Heart Recipient, Corwyn Collier.
While the flag was being raised by John Lemponen, Essance Hall and Brandi Hamiid sang the National Anthem.
Many students from the various media programs were there to document the event, in addition to Dan Kovalak’s AP Government class and Collier’s Government class.
After the Ceremony the students were given a chance to thank the Veterans for their service.
